Holiday Visits: Listen for Quiet Calls for Help

Visiting aging loved ones is a cherished opportunity, but it also provides a chance to assess their well-being. Subtle changes can indicate they need additional support to remain safe and healthy at home. Recognizing these signs early is vital for ensuring their safety and quality of life.  Take the time during your visit to listen for the quiet calls for help.

Signs to Spot

Take note especially of changes in how your loved ones handle caring for their home, manage their household, engage with their community, and maintain their personal appearance. “I always bring it back to the basics of daily living, such as bathing, eating and walking,” says Lyn Weinberg, a geriatrician and director of the division of geriatrics for the AHN Primary Care Institute. “When people are having decline in any one of those areas, you know they are at risk for something bad happening.” Montana Senior News

Physical Decline

One of the most apparent indicators is physical decline. Weight loss could indicate poor nutrition or an untreated illness. Bruises might mean your loved one has fallen.  Even small accidents can be warning signs. Frequent falls or trouble standing up could suggest the need for in-home care to prevent future incidents.  Seniors Guide

Difficulty walking and walking with an uneven gait could indicate dizziness, lack of confidence in walking without assistance, or an underlying illness that might interfere with balance.  Medications and their interactions could be another cause. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Many people who fall, even if they’re not injured, become afraid of falling. This fear may cause a person to cut down on their everyday activities. When a person is less active, they become weaker and this increases their chances of falling.” CDC

Lapse in daily hygiene

Look for changes in your loved ones’ appearance.  Are their clothes soiled?  Do they have unwashed or unbrushed hair?  Have they stopped shaving regularly?  Having a “retired” look as opposed to a “dressed-for-success” one does not mean they need assistance, of course.  Slipping into being unkempt and unclean, however, might mean they have difficulty keeping up with their everyday hygiene.

Declines in personal appearance could be caused by changes in cognitive health.  They could also be due to depression or lack of energy and physical flexibility to keep up with showering and dressing.  In turn, not looking their best might cause them to isolate themselves. Social withdrawal not only impacts mental health but can also increase the risk of conditions like dementia and high blood pressure. Disorder in Household and Personal Management

Changes in the home environment often reveal deeper struggles. “Is a house that used to be pristine now messy and dirty, with stacks of unopened mail or spoiled food on the counter?” asks Dr. Richard Morycz, PhD. Meadville Tribune  In some situations, seniors may limit their movement to one or two rooms to avoid falling over clutter or having to climb stairs.

Emotional withdrawal and cognitive shifts also provide crucial clues. Daily routines, such as missed meals or forgotten medications, are another area to monitor. Neglecting these tasks can have serious health consequences. For instance, 2nd Family notes, “Frequent forgetfulness, missed appointments, or problems with medication management could be signs that additional care is required.” As these issues accumulate, they highlight the need for consistent, supportive care. 2nd Family

Take Action as a Family

Observing and acting on these signs empower families to make informed decisions that respect their loved ones’ needs and dignity. Addressing these concerns with empathy is essential. Discussing home care options can be challenging, but early intervention ensures your loved ones remain safe and supported. As one expert concludes, “Home health care might be an option that can help them stay independent longer in the comfort of their own home.”  Amedisys Home Health Resources
