I’ve been attending a yoga class for 3 weeks now. I’m not brand new to yoga, but I’ve never been a regular either. I enjoy the dark, quiet, soothing atmosphere, but I don’t enjoy the agonizing stretching and pain in places I haven’t talked to for a while. I’ve got to admit, I absolutely love how my body feels when the class is over.
More and more experts and researchers are concluding that aging does not mean muscle degeneration. In their book, Younger Next Year, Chris Crowley and Dr. Jeremy James encourage regular, vigorous exercise. Strong muscles can protect you from falling, which is a huge risk for elderly folks. According to Aging.com, every 11 seconds, an elderly person goes to an emergency room due to a fall. Katy Bowman, biomechanist, teaches elderly clients to restore their balance and core strength. Balance and the ability to rebalance when met with irregularities, such as rises in a sidewalk, are essential for avoiding falls and enjoying your senior years.
Epic Elders do not have to sit out the race. They can work to achieve a better quality of life through exercise and stretching, which they can practice at the nearest YMCA or at home with exercise DVDs or friendly coaches. Many exercise classes, in person, online, or on DVD, have chair classes, with no standing involved. There are so many options! The only unacceptable option is to do nothing. Get going, and get moving! Your life will be so much better and so much richer!
